Feed Efficiency and Sustainability of the Cattle Industry
نویسنده
چکیده
In US dairy herds, the current national average age at first calving is 25.2 months. Increasing first-lactation milk yield could improve milk’s life-cycle production efficiency and decrease emissions. The productive life of dairy Holsteins in the United States born in 2000 decreased by 3.95 months compared with Holstein cows born in 1980. This negative trend needs to be halted to achieve environmental and economic gains.

Evaluation of Technical, Allocative and Economic Efficiency of Dairy Cattle Breeding Units in Moghan Agro-Industry with the Approach of Data Envelopment Analysis and Tobit Regression
Efficiency is one of the most important factors in productivity growth, especially in agriculture. The purpose of this study was to measure the technical, allocation and economic efficiency and to identify the factors affecting them in dairy cattle stations of Moghan agro-industry company. The data of this research are related to the year 2017, which gathered its statistics and information by do...
متن کاملREVIEW: Life-cycle, total-industry genetic improvement of feed efficiency in beef cattle: Blueprint for the Beef Improvement Federation
On a life-cycle basis, beef animals are able to consume large amounts of low-cost, low-quality forages relative to higher-cost concentrates compared with pigs and chickens. However, of the 3, beef is still more expensive to produce on a cost–per–edible pound basis. Accordingly, there is need for genetic programs and management changes that will improve efficiency, sustainability, and profitabil...
متن کاملTranscriptomic analysis by RNA sequencing reveals that hepatic interferon-induced genes may be associated with feed efficiency in beef heifers.
In beef cattle, production feedstuffs are the largest variable input cost. Beef cattle also have a large carbon footprint, raising concern about their environmental impact. Unfortunately, only a small proportion of dietary energy is directed toward protein deposition and muscle growth whereas the majority supports body maintenance. Improving feed efficiency would, therefore, have important cons...
متن کاملGenomic selection for feed efficiency traits
Introduction Feed costs comprise the majority of variable expenses in beef cattle systems making feed efficiency an important economic consideration within the beef industry (Koch et al ., 1963; Dickerson et al ., 1974) . Aside from the direct economic impact of this trait complex at the individual producer level, the projections of global population growth provide extra pressure for efficient ...
متن کاملDefining Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle
Most breeding programs have focused on improving economically relevant output traits such as growth, carcass quality and fertility to enhance the economic viability of beef production systems. Generally absent from current breeding programs in the U.S. are avenues for exploiting genetic variation in feed efficiency, even though reductions in feed inputs would substantially improve profitability...
